What riders say
The general consensus among reviewers is that the Newark Penn Station bus stop offers a challenging, often unpleasant travel experience despite its functional utility. On the positive side, several travelers appreciate the convenient access to food options like Starbucks and McDonald's, find the main building interior visually appealing and easy to navigate, and highlight specific interactions with helpful police officers and courteous station staff who assisted with delays and bag tagging. Conversely, the vast majority of feedback points to severe negative issues, including an overwhelming presence of aggressive panhandling, pervasive odors of urine, and general dirtiness alongside pests like mice. Reviewers also frequently complain about safety concerns especially at night, a severe lack of public seating where non-Amtrak ticket holders are barred from benches, overnight lockouts of elevators and escalators, heavy traffic congestion, confusing signage regarding departure lanes, and poor customer service and communication from Greyhound.

They lock escalators and elevators From midnight to 430 am. people starts looking for help with bags up the stairs because they lock out escalators and elevators . Mothers with babies ( everyone) and children( sitting on the floor) are blocked from sitting on the benches alloted for nj transit and amtrak customers while waiting for the train or bus. It's very inhumane . This needs change
It’s really busy during rush-hour. Lots of traffic when picking up and dropping off. Does not have designated sign for state to state buses. if you are catching a particular bus you have to keep asking every bus that pulls up so it’s hard. But if you know the time that you’re supposed to depart on a bus, just be there 15 minutes prior so you do not miss your bus. Otherwise you’ll be left behind. I’m a bus driver so this is my point of view.
It is pretty old but very easy to walk around Many people might say it's old and way too many homeless people around asking for a quarter, that's absolutely true, but I got great interaction with customer service and even the police officers were extremely helpful anytime I asked for information. The tracks and the roof beams structure needs some paint but it is not the end of the world, I don't mind trading an old building with great customer service attention for a brand new contemporary one in which you have to figure it out to where to go.
Greyhound “” Worst bus company I have ever experienced if I could boycott this company to not run here in Newark penn station I would customer service leaves you in the cold rain and snow with your children and wife and no where to go. Can’t even get a refund bus drivers are useless and disrespectful and disgusting 🤮. Multiple times people have had these issues and couldn’t resolve their issues with any of the employees or services. If I recommend a suggestion for future customers I would recommend run as fast as you can from this company as it has no consideration for your well being or safety or travel interests to your destination with no respect and common courtesy and especially services your paying good money for. Good luck catching your bus and especially catching it on the time they state as it’s not even on a timetable.
Arrived here off a greyhound bus from KC Missouri with my service animal. As soon as I got into the building I had a women tell me I cant be in here with my dog bc of women and children. I was on a bus for 41 hrs with women and children, no issues I had to sit outside for 3 hrs waiting for my pet Uber, while a women OD on herion and another guy saying he was going to stab his girlfriend. I saw one police officer ( the one who saved the OD women.) Serval addicts came up to me looking for money. As a tax payer my money shouldn't be funding a place where travlers have to deal with this shit.
Pretty odd place, the interior was nice to look at but regarding the homeless people is just wasn't for me, being bothered left and right for change. I asked the police if homeless people were even allowed in there and he said no but there were homeless people inside anyways.
Pros: good food close to station, a few quick food options inside station. Bathroom clean. Lots of security. Pretty main lobby. Amtrak n local bus also here. Cons: rideshare is confusing. Greyhound is frustrating. U can not buy tickets at the location, no matter what youre told. U must go online and purchase and have tickets on phone. There's no greyhound station there. The security is a bit harsh. I had to walk 2 miles to load my card and my sister waited there. This lady harassed her to go outside w the rest of the homeless if she didn't have a ticket, and wasnt nice in the least. I wouldn't wanna stay here on a long layover or overnight. Staff at the Starbucks inside was very kind. And the food was good. I'd return as long as I already had my tickets and did not have to stay long.
Having been to the major train stations in NYC Baltimore, Washington DC, and Philadelphia this one is hands down the dirtiest and the worst for vehicular traffic.
What a flippancy. There's a bus from New Jersey to Pittsburgh at 7:55AM. They have a delay, but the depart time is not clear. I see for the first time in my life. We are waited 200 min. And Bus departs at 11:15AM. For me not good experience. Think. Wait 200 min without any notice. It's easy to wait so long.
Homeless need to be relocated before something bad happens to bystanders waiting for the bus.
The only area with seating closed 3 hours before my bus arrived, so I had to sit on the floor. The waiting room had several mice crawling in and out of the benches. I saw someone get mugged and it was overall very sketchy.
A lot of rude people and unstable homeless people, but there was visible security positioned in most areas. The greyhound bus area is deplorable. Watch all your luggage at all times. Be aware of your surroundings at all times. Other areas were clean compared to most other bus stations. The Amtrak people will ask you to leave if you try to wait in their area without a train ticket. If you wait outside, it can get scary. Hardly any seating anywhere but Amtrak, and again, it only for Amtrak riders. The McDonald’s there was dirty, but the employees tried to be pleasant. The food and behind the counter looked okay. In fact, they food was served hot and tasted fresh. There were just so many panhandlers, scavengers, transients, and mentally unstable people wander wring around that it was unnerving. There’s also a place to get coffee and a pastry. There are some stores and vending machines in operation. Do NOT take out your wallet for any reason, or you’ll be swarmed by beggars. Have your credit cards, debit cards, ID, and your cash ready in a secure pocket on and close your person, like a front pocket of your shirt. BE DISCREET, and don’t engage in conversation or make eye contact with anyone unless absolutely necessary—you’ll be sorry if you do!! Bathrooms are okay, but be prepared for anything and everything. They try to keep the place clean, but there is just so many disgusting people. The greyhound area really was the worst of it, though. Stay safe, and good luck to you.
Horrible and disgusting. Stairway smell of urine. Falling apart.
This station is small on the inside (from what I could see in the 20 minutes I was here during my transfer), but the staff here was the nicest greyhound staff I’ve ever met! There was a late bus & they kept informing people if the bus was on the way or not yet and made sure they were well aware. They also were very helpful with passengers who didn’t really know how the tickets worked & bag tagging. It was the most pleasant experience I’ve had at a greyhound station.
steer clear of travelling through here at night. especially if you’re an international traveler. We had a two hour layover here for our bus ride back to toronto from nyc. Figured it was a a train station, we could find somewhere to eat, sit for a bit, etc. Not the case. The mcdonalds at this location was …. i wish i could go back and un-experience that. extremely sketchy and it’s the only time ever in my life i felt genuinely unsafe at a train station. panhandlers coming up to you and harassing you, the smell was rancid everywhere. nowhere to sit as well so beware if you have a lay over. if you’re just passing thru or commuting during the day i’m sure it’s a different story but at night … never again. had i known i would had to wait here i would have NEVER taken the bus in the first place. BEWARE .
I’m not sure who my bus driver was, but he was very rude to me. We stopped in Philadelphia where I asked him if it would be okay if I ran to grab some food from the fast food place right next to the bus. He said as long as it was quick I could, to which I agreed (that made sense). I hadn’t even left for 4 minutes (I all I was able to do was order) before I see the bus doors closing with all my belongings in it. I came back and I asked what happened, I thought he said I’d be able to run and come back, to which he told me he never said that, didn’t care whether I got my food or not, and that he had to go. I was talking very calmly asking if he could wait just 30 seconds for me to at least get SOMETHING , and he continued to cut me off saying “Let me tell you something, I don’t care, you get off this bus, you’re in you’re own.” What’s even more is that he was a good 15-20 minutes late to pick me up, and in a way it seemed I was getting the heat for HIS lateness. In any case, the tone was extremely poor, as we had an agreement and he decided to do what he wanted to do being that I’m essentially at his mercy. If these are the types of characters that Greyhound is choosing to employ, I’m positive I’ll switch to another bus company.
Now a days on screen they don’t mention bus rout number departing from which lane. It’s confusing riders to get bison a time rather so many time I missed my bus as I am daily commuter. Please work on more clear about screen notification
Pick my ticket up since I could not print it online. Clearly the rep seen my bag never stated I needed to check it in which I figured was part of the job. I get to the bus to bring the bag on and the bus driver states to put it on the bottom. Now my bag is taking off the bus loss and Greyhound sends a email stating they will not replace my loss items. The worse bus service I've seen ever. I will definitely be sharing the reviews and there response everywhere. When I ask did it need to be checked in the response was NO. clearly someone isn't doing a good job. Now u loose clothes personal documents because of this sorry bus services. I hope no one uses your service EVER. Lucky it made me pick 1 star cause you deserve negative 50
This place could really use some attention. Trash could be found pretty much everywhere you look. That being said, the staff we interacted with were all very friendly. Considering how packed it was due to extensive airport issues down the road, and frustrated people everywhere, that can't be overstated.
I tried to give a second comment on the Atlanta Greyhound bus station, but somehow I could not. So I'm making a honest comment on Newark Greyhound bus station in comparison to the Atlanta Greyhound bus station..... I feel proud to say Newark's Greyhound bus station is 2x better than Atlanta Greyhound bus station! I give it 4 stars because at least in Newark's station they have glass booths /a shield from the workers to customers. It just looks a little more decent than the Atlanta Station. Newark's station is a little bit more organized too. Also, the Newark Greyhound workers seem a little bit more aware of the bus schedules and more professional than the Atlanta station workers. Newark station is probably NOT the best station, but it is better than the Atlanta bus Station. Hands Down!!
